Continuity  & challenges

It is very hard because there is an immense amount of setting and extra characters changing, so you can’t really build on a relationship between the characters and edit a scene where they’re talking because quite simply, there aren't enough. The constant setting change cancels out the concept of time in the video, for you can’t really inform the viewer anything specific, however the way you fit the frames all together can create a timeframe of some sort. Furthermore, I feel like I was limited by the effects we were only allowed to use, so I couldn’t even “fake” continuity by fixing the directions or reversing clips. So in my video remix there really isn’t a sense of time, the continuity probably only strongly existed in the start of my video, where the dot enters the room, and the straight line immediately falls in love, and I believe that was easily done only and only because there were actual characters and a setting where there were other people.
First you get easily bored form the number of times you have to hear the audio while cutting, and editing, and that kind of blocks the creativity juices, for when you start getting annoyed with what you’re working with
Final Storyboard
FINAL VIDEO EDIT
For my own remix of of the Living for Fragrance perfume ad, I started off my entire process by studying the scenes of the advertisement and the characters. I wasn't the least bit interested in the male figures in the video for it was all about women and their essence which explains my first choice in picking a homosexual pairing for my story to begin on, to emphasize that feminine aura I picked on while watching the advertisement. I chose to create an unrequited love story between the dot and the straight line for there weren't enough scenes of the straight line to build anything off of it, so I had to make it brief. I then noticed that some of the reactions my "dot" character gave while enjoying the perfume seemed very sexual and made me feel like she was very comfortable with her sexuality and it was part of her appeal. Furthermore, the advert showed how exotic and feminine some of the perfumes made her feel so this helped me build her carefree, I can do anything because I have sexual energy character. This also explains my choice of the rock n roll inspired music in the background for it truly represents the anarchy and carelessness I wanted my "dot" character to exhibit along with the fast transition it shows us how different her lifestyle is from all the boring other characters that were show in the beginning of the video. I also wanted to emphasize the dullness, and how mundane the early characters are, to be more particular the straight line, by adding a very romantic subtle tune in the background. We move on after the fast transition and exploration of the dot character we go back in time, a flashback, to the party scene to a conversation that happens between the straight line and a friend where he tries to explain to her that the dot isn't worth her time and that there is many others like her, and that she lacks depth aka shallow. However, the straight line does not budge for she no matter what anybody said about her she'll always be beautiful to her eyes , personally this scene really touched me and the emotion in the narrator's words really made me tear up for that truly is the definition of true love. We return back to abrupt and even more fast transitions of scenes of the dot, I wanted the transitions and background music to reflect the change in the energy and mood, for now things are changing we are now viewing the personal point of view of how our dear straight line views the dot. For she is feminine, all woman, etc, however there is something stirring up in the air, the quick abrupt transitions and the mysterious background music showcases that. We then finally reach a revelation the dot comes to all on her own, that this life she was living was not all that, for it was anarchy, "suddenly she realized that what she thought was freedom and joy was nothing but anarchy and sloth." We then finally end the video with a very important message the struck out to me and I even tweeted from how quotable it was, "freedom is not a license for chaos". A message that every teenager and young adult comes to on their own after a long series of lessons learned and mistakes made, and their true key to maturity and adulthood, including myself. I never thought I'd go through so many emotions, but I am truly proud of the work I was able to do with this video edit for I truly put myself in the dot's character, and hope to reach her ending my own reality soon.
some important video techniques that helped reach the product I wanted to create were:
- Audio choice (rock n roll, mysterious modern, and romantic)
- segmenting the scenes to represent time (the flashbacks, the dot's storyline, the pov of the straight line on how she viewed the dot, and finally the realization)
- Transition through cutting and cross fading, it was my first time ever to crossfade and I wanted to only use the effect in the scenes with the straight line for to me personally it reflects dullness, and delicacy, as for the cut effect it was used mostly around the dot character for it truly represented her franticness, and wild character
- Quotation, the quoting was very important in my video, this is also a part of audio
- Symbolization, earlier in the video when we're exploring the dot's character and traits, with every word that described her there was a perfume to represent it, giving an ode to the original advert
